A trip does not begin with a first step, but with a dream. Since I
was a child, I gravitated towards travel agencies and their window
displays. Since I was twelve years old, I knew that I wanted to see
Timbuktu and also Machu Picchu.
So, after my A-levels, I started to work in a travel agency. This was a travel agency which dealt basically with busses and seniors booked tours to the nearby thermal baths.
Then I studied to become a teacher and about the time I finished my exams, the German state found out that there were too many teachers.... So I ended up in a travel agency again, but this time in a real one. Once a while, it was possible to do the really big stuff; half a year in Central and South America, three months in India and nine months overland from Jordan all the way to Beijing and back... On that trip, I crossed many countries from Jordan into Syria, Lebanon, Iran, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Tibet, China, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kirgizstan, Turkmenistan, Iran and Turkey. It was very hard to go back.
After that I discovered Africa. In seven months from Morocco into Mauretania, Senegal, Mali (Timbuktu!!!), Niger, Chad, Sudan to Ethiopia. A great trip!
My biggest trip was again to Africa. My big aim was to combine Kenya, the country of my very first journey to Africa some 20 years back with Niger, the country I loved most on my last trip. The country was large and that´s why it took me 333 days, mostly travelling by bus and train and sometimes by trucks and sometimes on foot.
I have been back from this trip since May, 2010. There were others to come: several trips to India, another longer one to Afrika in 2013.
I do quite a few shows about my travels, but they are all in the German language - sorry about that.
