Madurai – city between a huge temple and markets

South India is full of colourful temples. One of the biggest and nicest is Meenakshi Temple of Madurai. This photo, I did from my hotel roof. In this hotel, nobody stays because of its rooms, but beause of the location and the view.

Meenakshi Temple of Madurai is one of the great examples of the drawidian temple architecture. The oldest parts are out of the 12th century. The Gopurams do not only look huge, they are huge – they are 60 meters high!

Very interesting is the market of Madurai. Veggies, fruits and flowers are brought each morning from the surrounding villages. Most flowers are used as offerings in the temple. These flowers can be bought as single flowers or as a garland. These garlands are perfect to put around a gods neck...
